Within a 15-20 minute drive of Penticton, British Columbia, there are over 170 wineries operating in the South Okanagan. These wineries more than 75 grape varietals, with three distinctly different wine regions including Naramata, Okanagan Falls, and Summerland with over 80 wineries. Some of the best wineries in the area offer breathtaking views of Okanagan Lake. From the wines we sampled to the ambience at every stop, here’s a snapshot of our wine-tasting trip.
Highlights of Wine Tasting
Daydreamer Wines
Our wine adventure began at Daydreamer Wines, a tiny organic winery well-known for its environmental consciousness. Six wines, each with a unique taste, were part of the tasting. There was something for every taste, from fresh whites to strong reds. Their rosé truly drew our eye with its ideal mix of fruitiness and acidity. We got a bottle to bring home since we loved it so much. This was the ideal beginning to our day—the intimate environment paired with courteous, informed employees.
Marichel Winery
Our next stop was a boutique winery emphasising estate-grown grapes called Marichel Winery. We experimented with four wines here. Though we succumbed to the rose once more, their Syrah and Viognier were unforgettable. Marichel was the perfect place to sip and unwind—quiet and serene, with a view of the vineyard. It was a wonderful experience since the staff truly spent time describing every wine, and the tasting felt personal.
Wesbert Winery
At Wesbert Winery, we matched wine to some very fantastic wood-fired pizza. The vineyard is well-known for its cuisine. Although we lacked a comprehensive tasting list here, it was abundantly evident that the wines were designed to go exactly with the cuisine. This is a fantastic place if you wish to have a terrific lunch and some wine in one stop.
High Note Estate Winery
High Note Estate Winery was another jackpot. Out of the five wines we tested, everyone highlighted the variety of the grapes from the area. Every taste, from strong reds to cool whites, was pleasing. The tasting room had a laid-back atmosphere, and the staff was informed but not overpowering, so the experience was entertaining and instructive. Particularly, the white wines were perfect for hot summer conditions.
Though we stopped at Painted Rock for wine, its amazing views should not be overlooked.
Blasted Church Vineyards
Renowned for its unique branding and strong wine selection, Blasted Church Winery is among the first vineyards in the region. This is one of the most reputable vineyards in the Okanagan and a frequent tourist destination.
Dirty Laundry Winery
We also visited Dirty Laundry Winery, where we tasted five wines and some pizza. What makes Dirty Laundry special is its all-ages-friendly environment. They offer not only wine but also beer, coffee, and a variety of drinks and food options. It’s a great spot for families or groups with diverse preferences, and the relaxed atmosphere adds to the experience.
Fitzpatrick Family Vineyard
Our taste journey ended with a visit to Fitzpatrick Family Vineyards in adjacent Summerland. This vineyard specialises in sparkling wines; hence, tasting five wines was a true delight. The best aspect is the perspective. Fitzpatrick is on the brink of Okanagan water, and the panoramic perspective of the water and surrounding mountains is unmatched. Perfect for a warm afternoon, their glittering wines were clean and reviving.
Few Tips
- The ideal time to visit these wineries is from June to September; July and August are good times.
- Be ready for the heat; summer temperatures can get high. Though some keep open until 6 PM, most wineries are open from 12 PM to 5 PM.
- Booking your tastings ahead of time is smart since the more popular venues can quickly fill up during the busy season.
- Depending on the winery, wine tastings usually run from $10 to $40; very upscale tastings can cost $50. If you buy a bottle, many wineries will waive the tasting price, so carrying a bit of the experience home is a fantastic incentive.
