Why is it named as Bear’s Hump?
Bear’s Hump resembles the outline of a grizzly when viewed at from a distance. This has led to its unique nomenclature. Its Piikani tribe believes that Waterton Lake originated when a furious bear dug massive trenches. This bear next piled up rocks and earth from surrounding mountains. As the bear fell asleep eventually, it took the shape of a landmark which currently goes by the name of Mount Crandell.

Hiking to Bear’s Hump
If you are staying at the Prince of Whales hotel, then you can simply walk across the street to reach the beginning of the trailhead. If you are coming from any other place in town, then you can take advantage of the car parking space. However, it isn’t very big and usually runs of full capacity on weekends.
The entire trail is extremely well maintained. You will come across multiple stairs throughout the trail supported by wooden beams. The elevation gain is pretty rapid on this hike. But you can rest at the multiple benches lining the way. You can reach the top view-point on covering just 1.4 km which takes approximately an hour.

Bear’s Hump hike is well suited for novice hikers and those travelling with family. It can stun you with breath-taking scenic views without having to spend too much time or effort behind the same. The hike is moderately strenuous and this ultimately depends on your fitness level. Once you hike to the top, the stunning bird’s-eye view of Waterton town site will amaze you. Bear’s Hump sits at a low altitude and stays snow-free from May to October. For a proper winter hike, it’s advisable to carry micro spikes.
