Location

Troll Falls is located in Kananaskis Country, about an hour’s drive west of Calgary and just 25 minutes from Canmore. The trailhead is found near the Stoney Trail Day Use Area, close to the Nakiska Ski Resort. It’s easily accessible via Highway 40, which makes it a convenient stop when visiting Kananaskis. The designated parking lot often gets busy, so it’s better to arrive early.

Hike Description

The Troll Falls Trailhead is visible directly from the parking lot. The Troll Falls Trail begins from a wide gravel path that gradually passes through aspen and spruce forest. There are interpretive signs on the trail to stay on track. Before reaching the final stretch you’ll hear the sound of rushing water.

At the end of the trail, you’ll see the stunning Troll Falls, cascading over a rocky cliff. Before reaching the waterfall, look for a small footbridge that rises over a stream.

Extend Your Adventure: Upper Falls

If you are ready for a bit more exploration, continue to the Upper Falls. This extension will add up about 1 km each way and takes you to a steeper and comparatively more rugged path. With some extra effort, you can enjoy a more impressive waterfall. The Upper Falls trail has some wooden stairs and handrails along portions of the trail.

Best time to visit Troll Falls

You can enjoy this beautiful trail all year round. We definitely recommend hiking in both the seasons due to different landscapes. In summers, you can enjoy lush greenery; however, in winters it becomes a frozen wonderland. During winters, we recommend hiking with microspikes and trekking poles, as the trail can get icy.

Tips for Visiting Troll Falls

  • Try to arrive early as the parking lot fills up quickly, especially on weekends.
  • Wear comfortable shoes or hiking boots and bring layers as the weather changes frequently in mountains.
  • Bring water and quick snacks along with you especially when visiting with the kids.
  • Stay on marked trails and do not leave any traces behind.
  • There is limited cell service, so plan ahead and download the maps in advance.
  • Don’t forget to carry bear spray and know how to use it in case required.
  • All the visitors who plan to visit Kananaskis Country are required to purchase Kananaskis Conservation Pass
